Welcome back to Sharmaji Yatra! If you ride a motorcycle in India, you already know that our roads are full of surprises. Recently, my Royal Enfield Guerrilla 450 and I had a harsh encounter with one of those notorious Bangalore speed breakers. The result? A dreaded bent alloy wheel.
If you have ever found yourself staring at a dented or bulging motorcycle rim, you know exactly the sinking feeling I had. The immediate question that pops into every rider's mind is: Should I get this fixed at a local shop, or do I need to replace the whole wheel?
I spent some time weighing the options for my Brava Blue Guerrilla, and in my latest vlog, I break down exactly why I made the decision I did.
The Real Cost of Fixing a Bent Alloy Wheel
When I first noticed the bend and the slight bulge on the front wheel, my first instinct was to look for a repair shop. Straightening a wheel seems like the fastest and cheapest route. However, after doing some digging, I realized it wasn't that simple.
The Price Tag: Getting the alloy repaired and repainted properly was going to cost around ₹6,000.
The Safety Risk: Cast alloy wheels (like the ones on the Guerrilla 450) are incredibly strong, but they are brittle. Heating and bending the metal back into shape weakens the structural integrity. The last thing you want while touring through the hills or riding at highway speeds is a repaired wheel cracking under pressure.
Why I Chose to File an Insurance Claim
After considering the ₹6,000 budget for a repair that might not even be safe, the choice became clear. I decided to skip the local repair shops and register an insurance claim instead.
Going through your insurance ensures you get a brand-new, genuine Royal Enfield wheel rather than a structurally compromised patch job. The process started right away with a self-inspection via the app. It might take a little longer than a quick weld at a local garage, but when it comes to riding, safety always has to come first.
