Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed 3 has been described as an ongoing work of art by many gamers, sequel after sequel is like beautiful components put together to build a masterpiece. The series made its mark with its beautiful ancestral backdrops, incredible assassin style gameplay and an era branching tale that cleverly mixes unbelievable science fiction with an authentic history together laid out across a person’s bloodline. In the first few hours of game play, Assassin’s Creed 3, the latest installment to the franchise for Xbox 360 easily proves worthy to be — but doesn’t have to be — an ideal finishing touch to this masterpiece. But that feat doesn’t even tip the scale with it accomplishments. AC3 not only enhances the things that its predecessors have already accomplished, it also dares to do what they couldn’t do with great if not perfect execution. In short, it insults its own predecessors by simply saying “Anything you can do, I can do better,” and much, much more.
Once again the story focuses on an assassin from a distant past whose adventures are relived through the genetic memories passed onto his modern-day descendant and returning character Desmond and viewed through the futuristic animus technology. This time around, the new assassin and protagonist in question is Conner, a Native American who wages war against the British (as well as the returning antagonistic organization called the Templar) before, during and after the fateful American Revolution. Besides Connor, you also take on the roles of other playable characters including Desmond who employs his ancestor’s tactics in modern time.
The AC's story is almost perfectly written and is quite simply the best of the series to date for two reasons. First, the story does a great job of portraying the characters and events involved as humanly as possible without making it too melodramatic for players to stomach. Literally, once you start playing or even catch a glimpse of another playing the game you’ll find yourself held captive by the intrigue of the plot and unable to leave. The second reason is how far Ubisoft has gone to integrate actual American history into the story. The game immerses you in accurate time period complete with authentic backdrops, actual events that shaped their history, and the inclusion of historical icons like George Washington, Jefferson Franklin and much more from that time period. It’s all there for you to drink in as you assassinate your way to liberty. In fact, the history is so accurate (with the exception of the Assassin/Templar conflict) that one could actually use AC3 as a reference for a biography on the American Revolution.

The AC games that have come and gone have never looked as stunning as AC3 and that’s only putting it mildly. AC games have always been notorious for blending sci-fi computer elements and vintage scenery in the options menu and actual gameplay, and AC3 is no exception. It’s sleek and hard to look away from. As for the actual gameplay on its own, AC3 isn’t afraid to show what the full power of Ubisoft’s new AnvilNext game engine can do. Textures, character animations and physics are more realistic than previous games. Dynamic weather effects and season transitions are done so well it gives the impression that these characters are really living in time. However, Anvil is not without its flaws and it tends to trip up and fumble with the textures and physics every now and then. Nonetheless, AC3 is the most beautiful game in the series thanks to the new game engine AnvilNext.
AC3 is also the biggest of the series thus far and is jam-packed with content. The single-player campaign dwarves the full content of previous Assassin’s Creed games. You have the occasional story driven side missions alongside the main missions in 18th century America. In addition to these, you also have the Desmond missions in modern-day America. Although they are not intriguing as Connors, they are surprisingly well thought out and fun to play, and serve to answer the many questions the series left unanswered. But that’s just the tip of the iceberg. AC3 has new mission types that make you wish they were included in previous installments. For example, you can now take part in naval combat; commandeering a war vessel on the high seas and sinking and raiding enemy vessels along the way, Talk about awesome!!
Side missions have a larger library this time around thanks to the vast frontier in your backyard. When you’re not chasing down and killing redcoats in the towns or passing on useful items and information to help the resistance, you can partake in hunting wild life and trading their pelts and meat to other NPCs, collecting trinkets, managing homesteads, training other assassins and more. However, not all of these are well designed and they betray the sense of freedom you have when playing the game. Homestead managing especially feels like it’s strapping you down in the open world at times.
Fortunately, exploring the frontier takes all the grief away. The sandbox style gameplay really shines here especially thanks to the refined Free running mechanic which is easier and more fluid this time around. Climbing cliffs and running across tree branches is a breeze and looks spectacular thanks to the modified Xbox 360 controls. However, not every point can be reached and you end up fumbling with the physics when you try to force your way through them. Combat has also gone under some modifications. Although countering is still the core of combat, Ubisoft managed to slip more tools in the assassin’s bag of tricks. Expect to take advantage of the new finishing moves and new weapons like tomahawks, muskets, bows and arrows and more. You can also don disguises and duck down into mobile hiding places like wagons to elude the red coats now.
Multiplayer makes its triumphant return in AC3 and it's bigger and better than before. Besides the usual Assassinate mode that has you go up against other players in a cat and mouse game of assassination, Wolf Pack mode lets you team up with them to hunt down and assassinate several NPCs. The latter holds up surprisingly well but can’t match the charm of the former. Still, it’s a great addition to AC multiplayer.
AC3 is exactly what I expected it to be; the pinnacle of the series. It may stumble a little here and there but its flaws are dwarfed by its vast content which all comes together almost perfectly. Xbox 360 owners will get their money’s worth, and I would rate this game a 9 out of 10. Xboxlivecodesupdate.com is offering free Xbox gold membership codes so and grab them before its gone.
