Very often one needs to block some websites on on his PC. One solution is get a parental security application and block sites with it. But it costs and if you get one for free I promise it's more than what you are told i.e it may be a spyware, keylogger, adware or something like this. And one other way is simply persuade user to open that site but this isn't a guaranteed method. Then comes the use of host file modification. If you know about host file I will suggest you to skip to next section.
Step 2: Now you have to click on menu followed by open. You can also simply click Ctrl+O to open the"Open Dialogue box ".
Step 4: When you are on the location you won't see any file listed there but don't worry for the host file is one without any extension and notepad right then will show only those with *.txt extension. Now to fox it just select "all files" from the drop down box just above open button.
Step 5: Now select host from the list of files appeared. Doing so will open it in notepad as a text file.Once it opens up as shown below, you will have to type the line 127.0.0.1 www.websitename.com to its bottom and hit the Enter button. What is windows host file?
The hostnames connected to a network needs to be mapped to their corresponding IP addresses. This is done so to uniquely identify a particular system in a pool of systems connected to the Internet. This Windows Host file is responsible for providing this mapping function. Slight modifications made to this file can help you block the particular website. Well, now let us start discussing the process.
Block websites on windows by editing host file
Step 1: First of all you have to open notepad as administrator. To do so simply search windows for notepad and when found right click it to select "Run As Administrator".
Step 2: Now you have to click on menu followed by open. You can also simply click Ctrl+O to open the"Open Dialogue box ".
Step 3: Now browse the dialogue box to reach "C:drive\ Windows\ System32\ drivers\ etc"
Note: If you have installed your OS anywhere else than c drive then open above location in that drive.
